Dig that style! Throughout history, Jews have contributed much to the field of sartorial artistry. So turn to the left, and take a gander at these exemples d’excellence:

•MR. GOLDSTEIN: fictional immigrant tailor in the miniseries Roots: The Next Generation who represents the Jewish merchants of the post–Civil War South who did their best to clothe their fellow townspeople . . . despite being set upon by the era’s entrenched anti-Semitism that could result (as it did for Goldstein) in harassment, vandalism, and destruction of store and home

•EDITH HEAD: winner of a record-breaking eight Academy Awards for Best Costume Design from 1949 to 1973, making her the most Oscar-earning woman of all time; immortalized for her unique style of large black sunglasses and short bobbed black hair as spotlighted by “Edna Mode” in Pixar’s The Incredibles

•MARC JACOBS: toast of the late 1980s glitterati for infusing a youthful “punk” aesthetic into his line of high-fashion garments, he later became creative director for Louis Vuitton and was listed in 2010 as one of Time magazine’s most influential one hundred people on the planet

•CALVIN KLEIN: established Calvin Klein Inc. in 1968 before his name became synonymous50 with the multitude of designer fashion and fragrance wares his company produces and distributes

•ESTÉE LAUDER: Josephine Esther Mentzer gained interest in retail at the family hardware store, learned about cosmetics from her chemist uncle, then started the cosmetics company bearing her name in 1946

•RALPH LAUREN: born Ralph Lifshitz, this billionaire designer grew up in the same Bronx community as Calvin Klein and started off in 1967 in the modest realm of ties, the first of his eponymous lines

•ISAAC MIZRAHI: given his first sewing machine at ten, started his own clothing line at fifteen, and is known today as fashion designer, television personality, and former head judge on Project Runway All Stars

•RELIGIOUS RAIMENT: there’s the cloth or silk yarmulke,51 most commonly worn by observant Jewish men in the tradition of keeping one’s head covered as humble tribute to the Creator; some women might wear sheitels (wigs) or tichels (headscarves); there’s also the tallith, a fringed prayer shawl; and the kittel, a knee-length cloth robe donned by those conducting spiritual ceremonies such as Passover

•LEVI STRAUSS: German immigrant who started San Francisco–based Levi Strauss & Co.52 in 1853 selling dry goods during the heyday of the Gold Rush, and in 1873 partnered with Latvian-born fellow Jew Jacob W. Davis53 to become history’s first manufacturer of blue jeans
